Lions from Dunedin, New Zealand. These beauties were sent to us by Kay at As It Happens. They live in a public garden in Dunedin, New Zealand, as Kay explains: "They’ve been there guarding some stone steps for as long as I can remember ... I love to take children to see them – they like to climb up on their backs."

Lions from Cape Town, South Africa. Absolute Vanilla (&Atyllah), who took these photos, says: "These eight huge bronze lions by John Macallan Swan (the English painter and sculptor) flank the 49 massive steps which lead up to the memorial of Cecil John Rhodes in Cape Town, South Africa. Each lion is nearly two meters in length - great, imposing beasts who gaze out over the city of Cape Town and towards the South African hinterland. Rhodes was the British colonialist who made his wealth in the diamond rush - and founded the De Beers mining company - and went on to become Prime Minister of the Cape Colony). Rhodes Memorial is situated on the slopes of Devil's Peak - one of the two peaks that flank Table Mountain. The monument, built from granite, was started in 1906 and completed and dedicated in 1912. The 49 steps represent each year of Rhodes' life."
